Before we get started, in case you’ve never heard of brainwave entrainment aka brain entrainment, let’s cover the bases…

What is Brainwave Entrainment?

Brainwave entrainment is a synchronization of brainwave frequencies with periodic stimuli such as light, sound, or vibration that produce frequencies to induce specific brain states. This has been achieved traditionally for thousands of years through the use of things such as meditation, chanting, prayer bowls, drum circles, and trance dancing.

But before you run off and join a drum circle (more power to you) what if I told you that with the dawn of modernization new tools rooted in these traditions of sounds and vibrations have been developed as a way for people to reach a state of deep meditation quickly?

How quickly?

Whereas it can take months, or even years of meditation to reach certain powerful brainwave frequencies, by training the brain with things like binaural beats and isochronic tones those same frequencies can be reached almost instantly. I don’t know of an easier method to experience such powerful changes within the mind and body within such a short period of time…except for maybe the Vulcan mind meld.

What are Binaural Beats?

Throughout the day whenever we’re doing or experiencing anything our brains are operating at certain frequencies. Binaural beats are audio tracks that contain sounds or tones with specific frequencies. These can actually be measured with an EEG machine.

When measuring the electrical pattern of a person listening to these tones they have been scientifically proven to alter brainwave frequencies, bringing both hemispheres of the brain into a resonated, and synchronized state. When both sides work together the brain can reach full potential, allowing magical things to happen.

How Do Binaural Beats Work?

By nature, humans aren’t able to hear any sound below 20Hz. Most brainwave frequencies are below this level. By playing two similar yet slightly different tones or frequencies in each ear this creates a tone that isn’t really there. This third tone is known as a binaural beat. These tones have frequencies that the brain resonates to.

For example: Playing a tone of 200Hz in the left ear and 209Hz in the right ear creates a binaural tone of 9Hz. It only takes a matter of minutes for the brain to turn this perceived tone into a state of mind. In this particular case 9Hz promotes alpha brainwaves, a frequency that has been proven effective at improving, among other things, memory. This graphic shows the different brainwave frequencies and some of the states they induce.

Note: A fifth frequency, Gamma (40Hz), although not represented in this illustration, induces things like inspiration, higher learning, and focus.

Benefits of Binaural Beats

Added to the benefits from the illustration above are:

  • Stress and anxiety reduction
  • Increased energy
  • Increased motivation
  • Personal and spiritual development
  • Overcoming depression
  • Overcoming addiction
  • Restful sleep
  • Enhanced creativity
  • Pain relief and management
  • Healing within the body

Note: These types of beats must be listened to while wearing headphones. It is the only way to integrate both sides of the brain.

What are Isochronic Tones?

There are many opinions that these tones may be the most effective tool for brainwave entrainment. Unlike the two tones used in binaural beats, a singular tone is used, it is then spaced out and turned on and off rapidly. This creates sharp, distinctive pulses of sound with the intensity going up and down and back again in an evenly spaced manner. In essence it provides an intense synchronization of the brain at a quick pace.

Isochronic tones alter brainwave frequencies and induce a positive state of mind. The same type of benefits can be achieved with them. Obviously the draw with isochronic tones is reaching deeper and more productive brainwave states with very little time involved. While the use of headphones is recommended, it isn’t required, but a noise and distraction free environment are necessary for best results.

The Power of Isochronic Tones

Isochronic tones are quite powerful by themselves, however, I find that listening to them on their own is annoying for me, my eyes tend to jump around, and at times I have even experienced nausea. I don’t do well with caffeine or too much stimuli and that’s the best way I can describe my sensation while listening to isochronic tones by themselves. That, and the feeling of motion sickness.

But, and this is a HUGE but – layered with binaural beats, other instruments, or music it’s a totally different experience.

I thoroughly enjoy throwing on my headphones, shutting out the chaos, noise, and distractions outside and zoning out with meditation tracks that layer isochronic tones with music. My state of mind and body feel great after just a 15 minute session, and if time permits, I suggest 30-60 minute audios – like a spa day for the mind. I feel relaxed, gain more clarity, and am more prepared to face and handle challenges.

Besides, there’s something that just makes me feel good knowing my brainwaves look like this after just 15 minutes! Ahhhhhh.

My Top Recommendations For Brainwave Entrainment

With the dawn of YouTube, obviously we have access to tons of free videos, but you really have to watch out. The problem is that many people are treating brain entrainment like a trend and creating loose versions of audios that have not been scientifically proven to work. You can’t just throw some tones and beats together and have them be effective.

There is a proven scientific method for the engineering process in order for these tools to work correctly. Which is why getting your beats from a trusted source is the way to go, one who’s technology is backed by research.

  2. Tina

What an interesting read that provides in-depth details on brainwave entrainment. I have heard of this once before, but wasn’t sure how well it works. While meditation is simple to do, I think it takes a lot of practice to tune out everything in order to get in the state that you need to be. Luckily for me, I do have djembe (African drum) and I find it therapeutic. Nice review!

    1. Jess

Hey thanks Tina! I also have a djembe so I totally get it! I have always been drawn to beats or percussion, I love the vibrations, they just make you feel so good. These brainwave entrainment audios are extremely effective and do offer the added benefit of listening through headphones which allows you to focus much more easily. As you say, the tricky part for most is to be able to quiet the mind and shut out noise during meditation, which is why brain entrainment is such a valuable tool.

  3. Loes

Hello Jess, nice website you have! I have practiced brainwave entrainment a few years ago. Somehow I stopped listening to it. I know I even looked up the frequency of money back then:) It certainly worked relaxing, I remember. I liked the binaural beats best. Perhaps I should take up the habit again, I do have some CD’s somewhere. I surely would highly recommend brainwave entrainment to anyone who’s coping with a stressful period in life, very helpful and relaxing.

Do you know if the isochronic tones can be compared with the trance music they play at house parties?

I am curious for your answer on that, greetings Loes

    1. Jess

Thanks so much Loes! It’s great to hear feedback from someone who has used and benefited from brainwave entrainment, so thanks for sharing that :) It takes a unique understanding of engineering to be able to create binaural beats and isochronic tones with the correct frequencies to actually alter brainwaves and induce states of mind for particular purposes, like say, attracting money. In that way they separate themselves from the beats of trance music. However, the repetition of beats or tones, depending on the speed, is still quite effective at relaxing or amping us up in general. Thanks for such a great question :)

      1. Loes

Thanks for your answer Jess, I wonder, would it be possible, if they manage to mix binaural beats and isochronic tones with the correct frequencies through the trance music, and so create a mass state of mind, like say, attracting money?
        This would be very interesting!
I wonder what you think of this statement, Loes

      2. Jess

This would be super interesting, Loes! I love where you’re going with this…imagine how valuable creating a positive vibration on that scale could be?! If you figure it out, I definitely would love an invitation to that party lol :)

      3. Loes

Wouldn’t it be nice Jess, as we just could change warzones by setting a couple of loudspeakers up and bring a composition of trance music. I can see world peace right in front of me :) Loes

  4. Tanya

I have been looking for natural ways to improve my insomnia. I have tried many supplements and have only found a few that work (somewhat). I am very interested in trying binaural beats. Just wondering though, will I hear anything or are the binaural beats masked by other music? It would be great if this worked for me.

    1. Jess

My sympathies regarding your insomnia. I used to suffer from it, and know how debilitating it can be. I think you would find great relief from insomnia with regular use of these brainwave entrainment tools, I did. They are definitely a great tool to help with sleep, so effective that they induce lucid dreaming which can only be achieved through the deepest states of sleep. They have wonderful sleep audios to choose from.

To answer your question, the beats and tones are done at different frequencies, some audible, and some non-audible, layered with music. They’re super nice to listen to. You should check out the free samples/downloads!

Also for more information and effective tips to help you sleep better you can read my post here. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I wish you much success remedying your insomnia :)

  5. Janelle

Well binaural beats is a new idea to me although I have been a follower of the general concept for many years.
Ways that teach us or help us to relax are invaluable. Happy alpha brainwaves are a state that I actively seek. I haven’t tried these audios yet, but it could be an important tool for people who have difficulty finding time to ‘unwind’. Could they use it on the bus or train, going to work?
I learned other techniques to relax and it is true that I used those relaxation methods to manage severe anxiety and depression. I also used those methods for natural childbirth, twice and with great success.
Brainwave entrainment seems like a good shortcut to show people what it feels like to be calm, again.

    1. Jess

I’m glad I could introduce you to brainwave entrainment Janelle! Thanks for sharing your comment and success with managing anxiety, depression, and natural childbirth with the use of relaxation techniques. Absolutely they can be listened to on a bus or train work commute, just not while actually driving. That’s a fantastic idea for people who want to arrive at work in a relaxed, and more productive state. I love it!

  6. Roberto

Hey Jess, great article. I’ve played around with isochronic tones and binaural beats, and I completely agree with your opinion on isochronic tones. They are harsh! I’ve made use of binaural beats in a few of my own self-hypnosis recordings. I’ve invested in a brain entrainment program by Steve G. Jones’ and Dr. Joe Vitale. One question I would ask is how can I definitively and objectively know that these techniques are working towards the fulfillment of goals and/or body mind transformation? I always wanted to believe it was possible to alter my physical world through these techniques, but I’m not so sure how to gauge my progress. thanks for your input in advanced.

    1. Jess

Thank you for the great comment, and sharing your experiences with brainwave entrainment. For me the definitive way of knowing the process is working is experiencing the manifestations of what it is I am trying to attract through my mediation practice, and the healing I experience in certain aspects of my mind and body. I always give the target issue or goal time to be rectified or achieved, I think it’s most important as humans not to expect an instant miracle, and to continue our practice with persistence. As long as we do this the results will manifest. Hope this helps :)

      1. Roberto

        That sounds about right.
Just so I’m clear, are you meditating and separately doing sessions of binaural beats or are the two one and the same for you?

      2. Jess

Meditation takes on many different forms, and there are many different types, so for me sitting quietly without distractions, quieting my mind and letting the beats and tones do their work on my brainwaves is a meditation session in itself. However I do enjoy mindful meditation without brain entrainment tools as well, but at times it’s difficult to get into that space which is why tools can be so beneficial :)

  9. karim

    Hello Jess
This is a very interesting topic, first time for me to read all this information about brainwaves.

Do you have any posts or research about mind control? Is it really working?

  10. Tera

Hi Jess. I don’t know the first thing about brainwaves so reading through your website was a real eye opener for me. You have me very curious and I find my self wanting to try this. I’ve always found quiet time and meditation very relaxing and helpful for reducing stress but I never knew about brainwaves, tones, and frequencies. I am going to look into this and give it a try! I also know someone who suffers from severe migraines and I’m going to show them your website :)

    1. Jess

Thanks for stopping by Tera! I’m so happy you enjoyed learning about brainwave entrainment. I would love it if you would stop back by to share your results after practicing! Thanks for sharing with others – I appreciate it and hope they will find some good stuff here :)

  11. renan

    Hi Jess,
Interesting comment, is that you are an authority on this subject that has only advantages not only for personal development but also to control conditions.
My concern is if the brainwave entrainment is suitable for children with mental disabilities and if this can assist them with treatment.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
    renan

    1. Jess

Hi Renan! Thanks for your comment. While brainwave entrainment can be an effective tool for many, to answer your question, at the end of the post you’ll find some cautionary statements regarding the use of brainwave entrainment. Unfortunately it is not recommended for children and is recommended, to be on the safe side, any person with extreme health issues should use these tools under the supervision of a health practitioner. There are however, other highly effective methods of sound therapy which are more subtle but still use specific frequencies for different brain states.

You may read about this type of therapy here: http://essentialsofselfcare.com/healing-with-sound

I would suggest Sounds for Self Treatment, they offer 6 free full audios, one of which is “Learning Abilities” to use with learning challenges. I hope this helps :)

  12. Mara

    Hi Jess,
What an awakening! I am a very scientific person, and have always viewed meditation and other related activities (even yoga!) as all a bit “weird and wonderful”. The way you have explained how the sounds related to brain frequencies really opened my eyes, and allowed me to look at in a scientific way. It’s definitely the first time I have seen it described in this way. I went to the samples page and I’ve bookmarked it for future listening! Thank you for providing these to try out – it’s very generous.
    Best wishes, Mara.

    1. Jess

Hi Mara! I totally understand where you are coming from and am happy this opened the door to the scientific side of how certain beats and frequencies can affect brainwaves. Enjoy your listening experience and the benefits it brings you :)

  13. gerry

So on your reccomendation I purchased a program but when I open the email on my iPhone I cannot access what I bought. I can get it on my PC but not on my IPhone

    1. Hi Gerry. Hopefully you are able to access the audios on your iPhone at this point. If not, depending on which program you chose they both have great customer support, so you’ll want to contact them to get this sorted out. Here is the contact info for both:

      Meditation Power http://www.meditation-power.com/contact.htm

Hope this helps and enjoy your audios. I would love to hear what type of improvements you experience after using them!

  14. Shirley

I tried a brainwave entrainment program a few years ago, I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called though. It was 6 different audios to be used for one month each, in order, six days per week. I got to the second month and turned into a complete bitch almost immediately, and then went back to my normal self when that particular audio was done with. Do you have any idea what that’s about? Is it common for some binaural beats to just freak people out like that?

    1. Jess

Thanks for sharing your experience Shirley. Huh…stumped on that one…never heard of brainwave entrainment “freaking” people out. Some of the isochronic tones have made me feel a bit uneasy in my stomach, almost like a carsick feeling, but I’ve never personally experienced any issues with binaural beats, these always make me feel calm, centered, and focused.

All I can think is that maybe it’s possible the audios uncovered some feelings or emotions that were stored deep within your subconscious and literally tried to “work them out”. Sometimes we may need to get through a little “bitchiness” to break through to the other side…a normal process of being human =) Just my two cents…
