When it comes to making your own body butter it doesn’t get much more simple than this five ingredient whipped body butter recipe. It combines skin soothing mango and shea butters with coconut oil for a rich and decadent moisturizing body cream, with natural non-toxic ingredients that nourish the skin. It’s great for adults, kid, and babies. A little bit goes a long way, and it’s a great gift idea too.
Extracted from the nuts of the shea tree, shea butter is like superfood for your skin, ultra moisturizing and healing. It has a slightly nutty or earthy scent. Rich in vitamins A,D, and E, phytosterols, and essential fatty acids it stimulates the skins production of collagen promoting less wrinkles and more elasticity. It’s great for a wide variety of things including dry skin, eczema, stretch marks, sunburns, rashes and other skin conditions. It’s also effective for relief from insect bites and poison ivy / oak.
Extracted from the de-shelled fruit kernels of the mango tree, mango butter has natural softening properties, a creamy texture, and mild sweet smelling scent. It’s full of nourishing antioxidants, beneficial vitamins A, C, and E, and is great for things such eczema, psoriasis, rashes, stretch marks, dark spots, wrinkles, and sunburns.
Coconut oil is one of my favorites, I use it all the time for so many different things, both internally and externally. To learn about the numerous benefits of coconut oil, see my article here.
Whipping this butter makes it glide on silky smooth without leaving an oily residue after it absorbs. Just be prepared for a look of let down when your significant other comes home and sees you in the kitchen with a mixer in hand and gets all excited about that batch of cookies you’re whipping up! Sorry babe, just makin’ some body butter…
Whipped Body Butter Recipe
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup mango butter
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup apricot oil, almond oil, or grapeseed oil
- 10-30 drops essential oil
DIRECTIONS
- Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat
- Place shea and mango butters in a glass bowl and heat, stirring until just melted
- Remove from heat, stir in coconut oil and apricot OR almond OR grapeseed oil and let cool slightly
- Place in fridge for another hour or until it starts to harden but is still slightly soft
- Using a hand mixer, whip for several minutes until fluffy, also whipping in essential oils at this point
- Place back in fridge for 10-15 minutes or until set
- Store in glass jar with a lid. It should stay whipped at 75° or cooler but if it softens too much at higher temps it may need to be refrigerated for a bit to allow it to set
- Use as a daily moisturizer for the entire family to enjoy!
Note: Cocoa butter can used in place of mango butter, it’s a fantastic choice too, just keep in mind the fragrance is much stronger, almost chocolate-y, so it blends well with fragrances like vanilla, almond, and peppermint. I prefer to use mango butter most of the time since the mild, fairly neutral scent blends well with most essential oils.
This can also be made without the mango or cocoa butter as well. It results in a more oily texture which takes longer to absorb into your skin, but is also an excellent body butter. Here are the ratios for that recipe.
Recipe #2
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 10-30 drops essential oils
DIRECTIONS
- Follow all the same directions in the first recipe above and enjoy!
Have you ever made body butter? What are some of your favorite ingredients or scents? Think you’ll try this recipe? Share below :)
Jess,
I have never heard of this before. Sounds like a very interesting mix of natural ingredients. I never would have thought that it could be used for so many skin conditions. It does not appear to take that long to make and it would certainly be inexpensive. I don’t usually use such skin products myself, but I live with someone who does and she is always trying to get me to try them. I will have to tell her about this. Maybe I will try it when I get a sunburn the next time.

It does not take long to whip up at all, is much more economical than natural store bought body butters and you can count the ingredients on one hand to boot! If you wanted to try this for yourself essential oils like cedarwood and sandlewood will give it more masculine fragrance, or you can not add any essential oils at all, the scent on it’s own is really mellow and nice :)
Hey Jess, the whipped body butter recipe is right on time for me. I’m very health conscious and skin is our largest organ. I always use products that are all natural.
What I really like about your recipe is- all the ingredients are edible. I can’t wait to try this! Is it best to refrigerate the body butter to keep it fresh?
Yay! That’s great Ericka, you’re spot on about our skin. It’s so important to choose the most pure and clean ingredients to nourish your skin with. I’m a huge fan of knowing exactly what is in my body care products, and what better way to be sure than to make your own?!
If you plan on using it regularly, your body butter will stay fresh unrefrigerated if stored out of direct sunlight. The whipped texture keeps best out of the fridge if the temperature is 75 F or lower. I would only suggest to refrigerate it temporarily, giving it a chance to set for a bit if temps get above that.
I hope you love this, I’m excited for you to try it! Please let me know what you think :)
Hi, Jess.
I think it sounds nice your body butter especially with A vitamin that the body skin can absorb. I have always used body butter with different ingredients and I think your body butter seems to have some very nice ingredients. The content is easy to read and it is a nice website.

Wow, that looks like an amazing home recipe! I’m really big on beauty products and have been through numerous phases of making my own at home, but always got tired of the long and complicated process you had to go through, but yours sounds real simple, and I love the ingredients, so much nourishment with the shea and coconut oil, I’m gonna give this body butter a try, it looks perfect for winter!
I know what you mean Vivi! You’ll love this! Have fun & let me know how it is :)
Hi Jess, I have skin problems including eczema and your recipe seems easy to do. Is there any way to ensure that my skin doesn’t feel too oily, I have used oils before and they tend to be too oily. Also is there any particular coconut oil that you would recommend me using?
Hey Melissa! This is an amazing body butter for eczema. The type of oils used make a huge difference. I’m not sure what kinds you have used in the past, but all oils used in this recipe should not be too oily. I use this daily and, while it goes on oily at first, it soaks in beautifully, leaving no oily residue.
I would suggest the first time you apply it to do it when you are not in rush and have some time to test out how long it takes to completely absorb into your particular skin type. I think you will be pleasantly surprised that it all soaks in nicely. Also, if you shower at night, it’s great to apply before bed,
